Intent

At Langley Mill Academy we want our children to have the opportunity to explore, develop and enhance their creative skills and knowledge through a variety of mediums. Lessons are based on the National Curriculum and we focus on drawing, painting, printing, collage, sculpture, textiles and ICT.  Each medium is taught yearly, building on the skills and techniques from the previous years.  During each year, the children have time to discover artists in order for them to research, critique and create works in a similar style.

Our art lessons are based on the Nation Curriculum and, where possible, run alongside our overarching topic themes to ensure pupils make cross curricular links and a deeper understanding of how art and design both reflect and shape history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our and different nations.

 Implementation

The art curriculum is incorporated into the three themes (Values, Journeys, Changes) which run across the school.   Pupils are taught about artists and explore their artwork and techniques. Our pupils learn art through the following concepts:

- Explore.

- Practise & hone.

- Implement: Develop & create.

- Critique & Refine.

Lessons are planned with the skills taught during the previous year in mind.  Children are given time to reflect and discuss the works of famous artists as well as their own works.  New skills are introduced, practised and honed before being implemented into a piece of art. Children record their skills in their sketch book where appropriate and final pieces are displayed. 

Discrete teaching takes place during Art Week (summer term) whereby classes can choose an artist they have studied that year to revisit and explore further.   

 Impact

Children will be engaged and enthusiastic about art in school; they will use technical vocabulary accurately and know, apply and understand the skills and processes required for each medium. Children will improve their enquiry skills and inquisitiveness about the world around them, and their impact through art and design on the world. Children show competences in improving their resilience and perseverance by continually evaluating and improving their work. They will experience a wide variety of learning opportunities which will have a positive impact on their well-being and life chances.

Children will leave Langley Mill Academy with the skills required to continue their learning journey in KS3.

Progress in Art is demonstrated through regularly reviewing and scrutinising children’s work to ensure that progression of skills is taking place. Namely through:

Looking at pupils’ work, especially over time as they gain skills and knowledge.

Observing how they perform in lessons.

Talking to them about what they know.
