Music

What I have to say is all in the music...if I have something to say, I write a song!   (Paul McCartney)

At Langley Mill Junior School we actively encourage an appreciation of a wide range of musical styles from different artists and composers. During weekly assemblies we focus on a particular piece of music and the children have the opportunity to listen for enjoyment and hear some key facts about the artist, band or composer. The Spring term was all about classical composers and we heard exerts from Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, Brahms, Handel, Strauss and Schubert; a genre that dates back to the middle of the 18th century but still makes an impact on the modern generation. Currently, we are looking at music across the decades starting with the 50's and 60's with artists such as Frank Sinatra and The Beatles, right through to the modern day.

Music Tuition

Some of our students have music tuition in school such as violin, flute and guitar. Callulah (featured left) has been playing the flute for over a year now and has lessons every Thursday in school. George (featured right) has been playing for around six years and he is currently studying for his Grade Five. He has private tuition outside of school but he enjoys playing regularly in school assemblies.

Music across the Key Stage

Children will focus on five key aspects during Key Stage 2:

  • Exploring musical sounds
  • Performing skills
  • Composition
  • Evaluating their own work
  • Evaluating music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions

They will also cover technical skills such as singing in tune with expression, improvising repeated patterns and performing parts from memory and notation.

Children in Year 4 are currently learning the ukulele and have performed in school  for parents and also took part in an exciting concert at the Derby Arena.  They performed in collaboration with the Halle Orchestra and schools from the surrounding area.

After school clubs

We currently have a guitar club that takes place every Thursday between 3.00pm and 4.00pm  and this aims to give students an introduction to basic chord structures, popular guitar riffs and the opportunity to learn some modern pop songs. There are 10 places available and this generally runs for a six week period and then changes over to allow new students to join in the next term. Please see Mr Wood for details if your child is interested and would like to learn.

Please encourage your children to listen to a wide range of music at home and if your child is learning an instrument, please inform us so we can develop their skills further and give them opportunities to perform in school.
