Welcome to Year 6. Here you will find details of our curriculum and current topic, as well as information about visits we have been on, our work in class, our achievements and homework schedules. 


This  term will be a busy period for the Year 6 children, as we prepare for the exciting challenges and changes that a new school year brings. In May of this school year, the children will sit national Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs) and then prepare for transition to secondary school in the summer. 


Our topic: So many to so few

During this autumn term, Year 6's topic will be history based as we learn about what life was like during the Battle of Britain, as well as considering the wider events and consequences of World War Two.


The Battle of Britain and the Blitz had a significant impact on the lives of children and our literacy units will enable our children to understand some of these experiences. Studying 'The Machine Gunners' by Robert Westall will allow us to follow the adventures of children living through The Blitz, as well as helping us appreciate the dangers they faced each day and night. In guided reading sessions, using texts by Michael Morpurgo, we will look at the stories of evacuation and by watching and reading 'Goodnight Mister Tom', we will learn how hard this experience could be. Towards the end of our topic, we will be touching upon the events of Anne Frank's diary and the Holocaust. We will closely follow the centenary commemorations of the First World War and Remembrance Day events in November. We also plan to visit Eden Camp in North Yorkshire so that the children can experience the sights and sounds of WW2. 


In science we will be learning about light and how it travels, how it can be reflected and a variety of optical instruments, including periscopes. Additionally, we'll be carrying out investigations to determine effective materials for black-out curtains.


Mathematics for this term will follow our school scheme, beginning with number and place value, addition and subtraction, and properties of shape. You can view our Year 6 long and medium term planning for the year by opening the link. In addition, parents will also receive a maths newsletter at the start of each 3 week unit which details the children's learning, as well as questions to ask and activities and games to play together so that every child is supported with their mathematics at home.


The learning log task for this topic will be to research and present information about a chosen area of the conflict. Children will receive a prompt sheet over the half term. This will then help to support a literacy unit in which we will present non-chronological reports about life during the Battle of Britain and the Blitz.


 Our learning will focus on answering the following questions:

- What is a World War and why was there another in 1939?

- Who were the leaders?

- What was life like on the Home-front?

- Why were children evacuated?

- What were the sights, sounds and smells of WW2?

- Who was Anne Frank?


Later this term we will hold a Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) street party in school where the children's parents and families are invited to view our work from our topic, including books, art and dance, as well as sampling some war time recipes! We look forward to seeing you there!

Our next science topic: Evolution and Inheritance

During the second half of the term our science topic will focus on evolution and inheritance, including studying the discoveries made by the palaeontologist Mary Anning and biologist Charles Darwin (pictured below).


 Please find below expected minimum homework requirements during this term.

 Reading - Children need to read at home at least three times a week.  It is important children read with a clear understanding and this can only be achieved with continual practice.  

Maths - 1 set per week (Wednesday)

Spelling - 1 set per week (Monday)

Science / Topic – usually 1 piece per week (Friday)


Literacy – 1 piece every 3 -4 weeks (personal learning log) The ‘learning log’ is a piece of individual homework when your child may be imaginative, creative and resourceful in order to produce various pieces of work. Children will present their personal learning to the class throughout the topic and add any resources to our Learning Log Display. Using provides a good start to any topic based research.
